Antique Early Victorian Irish Mahogany Library Table by J. Kerr & Co c. 1850
A finely made Irish mahogany library table by J. Kerr & Co. The rectangular top is cut from richly figured solid mahogany, with rounded corners and a moulded edge, supported on twin trestle ends united by a turned stretcher and raised on quality hidden castors. The frieze features a false drawer and retains the maker’s impressed mark to the front left corner.
The table displays the enduring Regency influence favoured in mid 19th century Ireland, combining lightness of form with excellent timber and proportion. Sophisticated and practical in scale, it serves equally well today as a writing or library table, or as a refined console. Being finished on all sides it is also suited as a centrepiece within a living or study setting.
The Dublin firm of J. Kerr & Co. was active on Stafford Street during the mid-nineteenth century, exhibiting fine cabinet furniture at the Irish Industrial Exhibition of 1853. Their work is noted for its quality mahogany and restrained Regency-influenced design, both evident in this example.
Presented in very good antique condition with a rich, even colour and polished surface, showing minor wear consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
Irish, circa 1850.
