Antique Lighting

Good lighting transforms a room, and antique light fittings bring a warmth and character that modern alternatives struggle to replicate. Our dealers offer chandeliers, wall sconces, table lamps, standard lamps, lanterns and ceiling pendants in brass, bronze, crystal, glass and wrought iron.

Many pieces have been professionally rewired for modern use while retaining their original character. From Georgian brass chandeliers to Art Deco chrome uplighters, antique lighting suits every style of interior.

Why Choose Antique Lighting?

Antique light fittings were made in an era when quality materials and skilled workmanship were the norm. A Victorian brass oil lamp converted for electricity, a pair of Edwardian crystal wall sconces, or an Art Deco chrome table lamp will outlast anything available on the high street today and look significantly better doing it.

Safety is paramount with electrical items. Reputable dealers will sell lighting that has been rewired to current British standards. Always check that a fitting has been rewired before connecting it, and if in any doubt, have it checked by a qualified electrician before use.

Types of Antique Lighting

Chandeliers range from modest three-arm brass examples suitable for a cottage to magnificent crystal creations with dozens of drops. Crystal chandeliers were produced in vast numbers during the 19th century and genuine antique examples offer outstanding value compared to modern reproductions.

Wall lights, or sconces, are one of the most effective forms of lighting for period rooms. Brass, ormolu and cut glass examples from the 18th and 19th centuries provide soft, flattering light and work in pairs flanking a mirror or fireplace.

Table and standard lamps with original shades are increasingly sought after. Arts and Crafts examples in copper and leaded glass, and Art Nouveau lamps with flowing organic forms, are particularly collectible.

Fitting and Installation

Always use a qualified electrician to install ceiling lights and wall fittings. Check the weight of chandeliers and ensure your ceiling and fixings can support them. Ceiling roses and chains may need upgrading for heavier fittings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reputable dealers will confirm whether lighting has been professionally rewired to current standards. If not stated, always ask before purchasing. Never use an antique light fitting with old wiring without having it checked by a qualified electrician.

Yes, LED bulbs are suitable for most antique fittings and are recommended because they produce less heat than incandescent bulbs. Filament-style LED bulbs give a warm glow that suits period fittings particularly well. Check the bulb socket type before purchasing.

Individual drops can be removed and washed in warm soapy water, then dried with a lint-free cloth. For chandeliers that cannot be dismantled, use a specialist chandelier cleaning spray. Always turn off the power and allow bulbs to cool completely before cleaning.

Ormolu is the term for gilt bronze, created by applying a thin layer of gold to a bronze base. It was widely used in French lighting, clock cases and furniture mounts from the 18th century onwards. True ormolu has a rich, warm gold colour that improves with age.
