A late 17th century carved oak mule chest of conveniently smaller proportions, the top lid opening to a large storage compartment set over two drawers, and all raised on a later 19th century plinth base with sled feet.

The lid and front panel are richly hand carved with guilloche roundels enclosing rosettes, while the panelled sides are carved with foliate lozenges. The Victorian plinth is carved in a deliberately sympathetic style, complementing the original panels. The oak throughout has acquired a deep, naturally dark patina, with lighter wear to the high points, showing centuries of use.

The two drawers are later baize lined and locked by concealed pegs within the coffer section above. The interior also retains its original candle box, also now baize lined.

With a strong, architectural presence, its bold carving and modest proportions this is an impressive piece of late 17th century vernacular furniture providing practical household storage.  The later Victorian plinth and feet give stability while retaining the stature of the original design, all consistent with 19th century restoration practice.

Presented in very good antique condition with great character, lots of  honest wear and age-related marks consistent with its long life, including some historic evidence of long dormant woodworm. Later hinges, brass handles and escutcheons, all appear to have been fitted at the same time as the plinth during the Victorian era. Structurally all sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1680.
