Antique Victorian Ash Writing Table by Hindley & Sons c.1880
A fine Victorian writing table by renowned London cabinetmakers Hindley & Sons, stamped and numbered to the drawer. Constructed in well-figured ash, the piece features a rectangular solid ash top over a full-length frieze housing two drawers with Victorian Gothic Revival brass drop handles featuring cruciform backplates. It stands confidently on boldly turned spiral rope-twist legs terminating in shaped block feet and retains its original attractively engraved castors.
An impressive, noteworthy piece from one of London’s leading cabinetmakers of the Victorian period, combining Gothic and Jacobean Revival details within the refined proportions typical of the Aesthetic Movement. Decorative, robust and highly functional as a writing table or console side table. The figured ash is particularly attractive; warm, light and characterful, and far less commonly used than oak or mahogany.
Presented in very good condition with only some light age related surface wear. Stamped C.Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford Street, London, to drawer interior. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1880.
