Antique Victorian Ebonised Bonheur du Jour Writing Table c.1870
An exceptional Victorian bonheur du jour writing desk in ebonised hardwood with gilt decoration, designed in the French Second Empire taste and reflecting the fashionable Aesthetic influence of the period. The top retains its original beautifully aged tooled leather writing surface and pierced brass gallery over three small drawers, with a single long frieze drawer beneath.
The trestle supports are crisply detailed with applied roundels and scrolling ornament, joined by a turned stretcher and raised on original brass and ceramic castors. Compact in scale yet highly decorative, this is a refined occasional desk or writing table, equally at home in a bedroom or living space as it is a study.
Presented in excellent antique condition with an attractively aged writing surface and gentle wear to the ebonised finish and gilding, enhancing its character. Structurally sound, the drawers run smoothly and the whole is stable, clean and ready to place.
English, circa 1870.
