An impressive mid-Victorian card table crafted in richly figured rosewood, the elegantly shaped top swivelling and folding open to reveal a baize-lined playing surface framed in rosewood. The table stands on a twin pedestal and stretcher base with bold carved details, exemplifying the accomplished cabinet work of the mid-19th century.

The rosewood has mellowed beautifully, developing a deep lustrous tone that gives the piece real presence. When closed it serves naturally as a side table or console in a hallway or living space, and when required it opens for use as a sociable card table.

Presented in very good antique condition with a clean later baize interior, a mature patina and minor wear consistent with age. There are old, inactive worm traces to some of the softer secondary timbers to the underside, light nibbles to the stretcher carving, and some fine, perfectly stable veneer splits along the moulded edges as shown. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.
