A wonderful and unique 19th Century black forest carving of an elderly man sitting on a tree trunk holding a newspaper, the front of the tree trunk encased behind a circular glass window is the edelweiss plant, which comes from the slopes of the Swiss mountainside.  The newspaper that the elderly man is holding unravels to reveal an article titled "out of doors" by john Armitage detailing the search for the edelweiss star plant.  Circa 1880.
