Antique Dutch Walnut Marquetry Cabinet Linen Press with Floral Inlay, 18th Century
Description
An exceptional antique Dutch walnut linen press cabinet dating from circa 1780, richly decorated with intricate floral marquetry throughout. This impressive and highly decorative piece represents the finest tradition of 18th century Dutch cabinetmaking, combining elegant storage with an outstanding level of craftsmanship and ornamentation.
The shaped and serpentine cornice sits above a pair of beautifully figured panelled doors, each centred with an oval reserve of flowering foliage tied with ribbon motifs and surrounded by delicate trailing floral inlay. The lower section comprises three long drawers, each finely decorated with scrolling floral marquetry and retaining their original pierced brass handles and escutcheons.
The doors open to reveal a fitted interior with a series of shelves and shallow drawers, traditionally designed for the storage of fine linens and textiles. The sides are equally impressive, featuring further marquetry decoration including elegant floral motifs and urn-form designs, demonstrating the exceptional skill and attention to detail of the maker.
Constructed in walnut with contrasting lighter fruitwood inlays, this substantial cabinet is a fine example of Dutch decorative furniture of the late 18th century. The quality of the marquetry, elaborate design and impressive proportions suggest a piece created for a refined and important interior rather than a purely functional domestic item.
A rare and elegant antique cabinet, offering both exceptional decorative appeal and practical storage, equally suited to a traditional home, grand hallway, bedroom, library or contemporary designer interior.
