Antique Exceptional Pair of Victorian Burr Walnut Pier Cabinets with Ormolu Mounts
Description
An exceptional pair of Victorian burr walnut pier cabinets of outstanding quality, retaining a rich colour and beautifully figured veneers throughout. The serpentine fronts and elegant proportions give the pair a refined presence while the craftsmanship is evident in every detail.
The tops are finished with bold burr walnut panels framed by crossbanding and set beneath finely cast ormolu galleries. The ormolu mounts are of excellent quality with crisp casting and intricate foliate designs to the corners, friezes and bases, adding contrast and a strong sense of luxury against the warmth of the walnut.
Each cabinet is fitted with a glazed door enclosing shelved interiors, traditionally lined in a deep red fabric to enhance the display of silver and decorative objects. In the Victorian period pier cabinets such as these were placed in drawing rooms or reception rooms, often flanking a fireplace, used to display prized possessions while reflecting light and adding depth to the room.
What sets this pair apart is the combination of strong burr walnut figuring, high quality ormolu mounts and their true matched form, making them both visually striking and highly usable in today’s interiors.
Condition Report:
In good antique condition with light age related wear. The veneers are well preserved with a rich even colour. The ormolu mounts are crisp and intact. Minor surface marks consistent with age and use. The interiors are clean and present well.
