Antique Georgian Three Pillar Mahogany Extending Dining Table 16 Seater
Description
A superb quality Georgian three pillar extending dining table in the finest mahogany of excellent scale and proportion. The top displays a rich warm tone with beautifully figured grain and a pleasing depth of colour throughout.
Raised on three turned pedestal columns each standing on elegant swept tripod bases, the table is fitted with original and highly decorative castors, adding both practicality and a distinctive touch rarely seen on standard examples. The columns are well proportioned with classic Georgian turning, giving the table strength and presence without heaviness.
The castors themselves are a particularly attractive feature and notably original to the table. They are finely cast in brass with decorative housings, often referred to as “socket” or “shod” castors, designed both to protect the feet and to allow the table to be moved easily across polished floors. Their quality and design are consistent with high end Georgian craftsmanship and reinforce the overall standard of the piece.
The table extends to a very impressive length with the addition of its leaves, comfortably seating up to sixteen people. In the Georgian period tables of this type were designed for formal dining and entertaining on a grand scale, often used in large country houses where flexibility was essential. The ability to reduce the size when not in full use made them both practical and highly desirable.
This is a particularly versatile example offering multiple configurations from a more compact size through to a full dining table ideal for large gatherings, making it equally suited to modern living while retaining its period charm.
