Antique Regency Rosewood Brass Inlaid Card Table Console Table Fold Over Top Games Table
Description
A fine antique Regency rosewood card table of particularly rich colour and striking grain. The top shows beautifully figured rosewood with strong natural movement framed by delicate brass line inlay which continues around the frieze with elegant anthemion style motifs. The proportions are well balanced and the overall look is refined yet bold.
The table stands on a solid central column with a quadriform base finished with shaped feet and original castors. This is a high quality construction and gives the piece excellent stability while also allowing it to be moved easily around a room.
The top opens to reveal a baize lined playing surface designed for card games such as whist or bridge. In period these tables were used in drawing rooms for evening entertainment then closed and placed against a wall which is why they are now often used as console tables as well as occasional tables.
The rosewood is of particularly good quality with deep figuring across both the top and frieze. The brass inlay adds a subtle decorative contrast without overpowering the timber which is a sign of refined Regency design.
This is a strong example with excellent colour good scale and versatile use working equally well as a console table side table or traditional games table.
