Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Card Console Table with Ormolu Mounts and Inlay
Description
A very attractive Victorian burr walnut card console table of excellent quality, beautifully figured throughout with rich colour and striking grain. The top is finely inlaid with delicate line work and opens to reveal a baize lined playing surface, a feature typical of better quality mid 19th century examples.
The shaped serpentine front is adorned with decorative ormolu mounts adding a refined contrast against the warmth of the walnut. The table stands on elegantly turned and carved legs with unusual original porcelain castors, a particularly nice detail rarely found intact and a strong sign of originality.
The interior retains its original configuration, designed for card playing and social games. In the Victorian period such tables were used in drawing rooms for entertaining guests, then closed to sit neatly against the wall as a console, making it highly versatile for modern interiors.
Condition Report: In good antique condition with minor age related wear. The colour and patina are excellent. Very minor surface marks consistent with use. The baize is clean and usable. Castors are original and in good working order.
