Antique Victorian Figured Walnut Writing Slope / Lap Desk with Fitted Interior

A very attractive Victorian figured walnut writing slope of rich colour and striking grain. The exterior displays beautifully figured veneers with deep movement and warmth, complemented by original brass escutcheons.

The interior opens to reveal a traditional leather writing surface with decorative gilt tooling, forming a practical angled writing area. Above sits a fitted compartment with divisions for stationery, pens and accessories, along with a period glass inkwell. The lid section conceals additional storage, typical of well made examples from the period.

Writing slopes such as this were an essential personal item in the 19th century, used for correspondence both at home and while travelling. Before desks became common in every room, these portable boxes allowed letters to be written neatly and privately wherever required.

The quality of the walnut and the well planned interior make this a highly usable and decorative piece today, ideal for display while still serving its original purpose.

In good antique condition with age related wear. The leather writing surface shows wear and marks consistent with use. Minor surface marks to the exterior. The interior remains well fitted and functional. Inkwell present.
