French Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze & Porcelain Mantel Clock by Jean-Baptiste Delettrez
Description
A decorative French, Louis XV style gilt bronze antique mantel clock dating from the late 19th century. The case has scroll leaf design, with beaded and fluted detail and floral and scroll engraving, flanked by two impressive lions heads.
The case has an inset porcelain panel to the centre, hand painted with two cherubs within a pink and gilt border. The clock is surmounted with a gilt bronze urn with porcelain body, and it is finished with a porcelain dial with Roman numerals and a floral centre.
The movement is an eight day duration, which strikes the hours and half hours on a bell. The movement has outside clicks to the backplate, which are a signature of the maker Delettrez.
The clock movement has the makers name - Jean-Baptiste Delettrez
The clock movement has been cleaned and serviced and comes with a 12 month guarantee.
Jean-Baptiste Delettrez was born in 1816, he was a renowned clock maker of the 19th century. He went in to partnership with Achille Brocot in 1851 and they became known as Brocot et Delettrez. They were known to be the most effective clock makers of their time and they made advancements in clock making including a unique single-arm double-wheel escapement and a temperature-compensated pendulum. Once Brocot died in 1878, Delettrez produced a conventional 8-day mantel clock, which struck the hours and half-hours, still based on the standard Brocot escapement and suspension that he had helped to refine. Delettrez died in 1887.
