A large antique Chinese harvest basket, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century and constructed from elm.
Traditionally, baskets of this type were used for carrying agricultural produce such as grain or rice, and may also have served for transporting water or other goods. It retains its tall fixed handle and simple, practical form.
Now well suited as a decorative interior piece, it could be used for storing logs, newspapers, blankets or other household items.
