Antique 18th Century Country Farmhouse Walnut Carver Chair
Description
An antique 18th century country farmhouse walnut carver chair, fitted with a loose seat cushion decorated with royal and heraldic motifs. The cushion features the royal cipher of King Charles I (reigned 1625–1649), the date 1630, and traditional heraldic imagery including lions, unicorns, and Tudor roses. The decoration reflects English heraldic design, used here in a decorative context.
When the seat cushion is removed, the chair displays a notable construction feature, with no rear seat rail supporting the cushion. Instead, the seat rests on the front and side rails, giving the chair an unusual and distinctive form of construction that is less commonly seen on country chairs of this type.
The chair has straight legs joined by stretchers, with turned supports to the shaped arms, providing strength and comfort. Made from walnut, it is a well-proportioned example of an 18th century country carver, suitable for use as a desk chair, hall chair, or occasional seating.
Condition:
The chair shows signs of old woodworm, which has been treated, and it remains structurally sound.
