Antique George II Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Fitted Writing Desk
Description
A fine antique George II mahogany chest of drawers dating to circa 1750, of particularly attractive proportions and incorporating a wonderfully fitted concealed writing desk within the upper section.
The chest has a rich mahogany caddy top above four graduated long drawers, retaining its original brass handles and standing on the original bracket feet. The restrained design, quality timber and elegant proportions are characteristic of good English furniture from the George II period.
The upper drawer is particularly interesting, pulling forward to reveal a fitted writing interior with its original green leather writing surface decorated with gilt-tooled borders. A hinged section lifts to form the writing desk, revealing a fitted interior with small compartments and drawers for writing implements and personal effects. When closed, the piece has all the appearance of a handsome Georgian chest of drawers, making the concealed desk a wonderful and unexpected feature.
The drawers are traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and oak linings, and the survival of the original handles, feet and fitted interior adds considerably to the character and appeal of the piece.
A beautiful and highly practical piece of mid-18th-century English furniture, equally suited to a bedroom, dressing room, study or living room.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with age-related wear, marks and variations to the timber consistent with its considerable age and use. The original fitted interior and leather show expected signs of wear and patination. The chest retains its original brass handles and bracket feet. Please see photographs for further details.
