Antique Georgian Mahogany Lamp / Work Table With Removable Sewing Basket
At a Glance
A very elegant antique English Georgian mahogany lamp or work table dating to around 1800 during the reign of George III.
The table features an attractive cut corner top above two drawers and stands on slender turned legs united by an X framed stretcher. The design displays the refined proportions and restrained elegance associated with late Georgian furniture.
The hinged top opens to reveal a removable work tray and beneath the table sits the original fabric work basket which can easily be removed if preferred.
Originally these tables were made as sewing or work tables and were used for needlework and embroidery, with the basket designed to hold wool, fabric or sewing projects while the tray organised sewing tools and materials.
Today they are more commonly used as lamp tables or occasional tables beside a sofa or chair, making them both practical and decorative pieces of early English furniture.
The table displays a lovely rich mahogany colour and elegant proportions typical of the George III period.
Condition Report
Good antique condition with age related wear consistent with use. Minor marks to the top as expected with age. Structurally sound and sturdy. The fabric work basket remains present and can be removed if desired.
