Description
A charming antique Georgian mahogany writing slope box of rectangular form with brass carrying handles and original escutcheon.
The hinged top opens to reveal a traditional blue baize writing surface designed to support paper for comfortable writing. Inside are fitted compartments for pens, ink and stationery along with a sliding panel concealing a hidden compartment, a feature commonly used at the time for storing private letters or valuables.
Writing slope boxes were an essential item in the Georgian period allowing correspondence to be carried out anywhere whether at home or whilst travelling. Before desks became widely used they served as a gentleman’s portable writing station.
A practical and decorative piece ideal today as a desk accessory or for storing documents and personal items.
Condition Report
Good antique condition with age related wear. The interior shows historic ink staining and signs of use. The baize is worn but remains functional. Light surface wear to the exterior consistent with age. Structurally sound.
