Antique Pair Giltwood Rococo Chinoiserie Wall Mirrors
Description
A striking and highly decorative pair of antique giltwood wall mirrors beautifully carved in the Rococo revival manner with strong Chinoiserie influence.
Each mirror features an elaborate pierced frame with finely detailed scrollwork trailing foliage and distinctive perched birds all centred around an architectural pagoda style crest. The carving is crisp and expressive throughout giving the pair real presence and movement.
The mirror plates sit within shaped borders framed by rich warm giltwood which has developed a pleasing patina over time. Designed as a true pair they create balance and symmetry ideal for positioning either side of a fireplace console table or doorway.
In the 19th century such mirrors were used to enhance light within a room while also acting as statement decorative pieces reflecting both status and taste. Today they remain highly versatile and work equally well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
