Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Canterbury Magazine Rack / Occasional Table
Description
A superb quality Victorian burr walnut Canterbury of elegant proportions richly figured throughout and retaining a beautiful warm tone. The top displays a particularly striking burr walnut figuring framed by a finely carved pierced gallery with decorative finials to each corner.
Raised on elegant barley twist supports, the piece has a strong decorative presence while remaining practical in scale. The central section is fitted with dividers traditionally used for storing sheet music making this both a functional and attractive piece.
Below a carved fretwork panel adds further detail and craftsmanship with a single drawer to the base providing useful additional storage. It stands on original castors allowing it to be moved easily around a room.
Originally Canterburys were designed to sit beside a piano keeping sheet music neatly organised and within easy reach in Victorian drawing rooms. Today they are most commonly used as magazine racks or small occasional tables ideal beside a sofa or armchair.
