Antique Victorian Satinwood & Marquetry Inlaid Linen Press By S & H Jewell

A late Victorian satinwood linen press by S & H Jewell, dating to circa 1890, richly decorated with marquetry inlay to the two doors and across the drawer fronts. The piece is fitted with brass handles and finished with crossbanding framing the doors, drawers, and sides.

The marquetry depicts floral urns and flowing foliage set into the pale satinwood ground. Above, the cupboard is crowned with a canted cornice of stepped moulded profile, beneath which runs a repeating Gothic arcaded band.

Inside, the cupboard retains its original presser shelves (not shown in the photographs) and is also fitted with a full-width clothes rail, allowing it to be used as a wardrobe for hanging garments as well as for traditional linen storage. The interior and drawers are oak lined, reflecting the quality of construction.

The maker’s mark for S & H Jewell is located inside the top right drawer of the presser.

A decorative yet practical storage piece, well suited to a bedroom or dressing room.

About the Maker — S & H Jewell

S & H Jewell were London cabinet makers and furnishers trading from Little Queen Street and Great Queen Street, Holborn from the mid-19th century. The firm supplied high-quality furniture and later traded as antique dealers. Examples of their work are held at Chequers, Buckinghamshire, the country residence of British Prime Ministers.

Access & Assembly

This is an extremely heavy piece. It separates into three sections for moving, however the sections remain large and very close to standard doorway sizes. A previous owner needed to remove internal doors for access. Please check measurements carefully before purchase.
