Georgian Chippendale Period Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Brush Slide
Description
A Georgian mahogany chest of drawers from the Chippendale period, dating to circa 1750–1780, standing on bracket feet and fitted with brass handles in the Rococo manner.
The chest is arranged with four graduated drawers, each increasing in size towards the base, and has developed a good natural patina throughout. It is a classic example of traditional British Georgian furniture, with restrained proportions and practical storage.
A particularly interesting feature is the pull-out brushing slide positioned above the drawers. These slides were designed as a temporary working surface and were commonly used while dressing, particularly for laying out clothing, brushes or personal items. When not required, the slide could be pushed neatly back into the chest.
Chests of drawers fitted with a brushing slide are less commonly encountered than standard Georgian chests, making this a particularly useful and interesting variation on the traditional form.
