Victorian Mahogany Imperial Extending Dining Table by Gillows
Description
An exceptional quality and impressive mahogany late Victorian antique imperial extending dining table by the renowned furniture makers Gillows of Lancaster & London. The table stands on six square tapering fluted and moulded legs with original Copes patented stamped castors. The table has walnut telescopic extending running rails which seats four extra leaves when open and works as smoothly as the day it was made.
The table top has a moulded edge and is fitted with 10 brass table leaf locking forks which can be stored in the table rails. The table has one original and three contemporary replacement leaves with the wood being of the same high quality.
When closed the table is six foot long, when fully extended the table is fourteen foot. Each additional leaf is 24 inches wide. When closed the table will seat six people and when extended will seat fourteen people comfortably.

Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow who was a cabinet maker from humble beginnings. He had direct access to exotic and top quality imported timber from the West Indies and created the finest quality furniture. In 1757 Robert went in to partnership with his son Richard who was an architect and a good businessmen with ambition who rebuilt the workshops and woodstores. In 1768 Robert I son Robert II joined the family business opening a shop in Oxford Street London. Gillows of Lancaster and London had a renowned reputation for their quality of work and helped furnish many aristocratic houses and are regarded as one of the best British furniture makers of all time.
