Antique Georgian Chippendale Mahogany Serpentine Console Card Table
Description
An exceptional antique Georgian Chippendale mahogany console card table dating from around 1770, beautifully proportioned with an elegant serpentine front and retaining its original refined eighteenth-century character.
Crafted from beautifully figured solid mahogany, the table displays a wonderfully shaped serpentine top with finely carved egg and dart moulding running around the entire edge. The shaped frieze follows the elegant curves of the top and is complemented by finely carved corner brackets which flow seamlessly into the square tapering legs. Each leg is further enriched with matching carved decoration, demonstrating the high quality craftsmanship associated with the finest Chippendale period furniture.
The top opens smoothly to reveal the original green baize lined playing surface, transforming into a practical card table while maintaining its elegant proportions. Closed, it serves equally well as a sophisticated console or lamp table, making it exceptionally versatile for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The rich colour and beautiful figured mahogany have developed a superb mellow patina over more than two centuries, while the restrained yet elegant carving gives the table a refined architectural presence. Its relatively compact size makes it ideal for an entrance hall, drawing room, sitting room or library where it offers both decorative appeal and practical use.
A fine example of Georgian craftsmanship that would grace any discerning collection or interior. Designed as a card table, this elegant piece also functions beautifully as a console table, making it an exceptionally versatile choice for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
