Antique Pair Regency Mahogany Inlaid Astragal Glazed Library Bookcases
Description
A superb and highly decorative pair of antique Regency mahogany inlaid bookcases of exceptional quality and elegant proportion. These refined English cabinets feature beautifully figured mahogany throughout, enriched with delicate satinwood stringing and striking classical urn inlaid panels to the lower doors.
The upper sections are fitted with astragal glazed doors, the elegant Gothic arch glazing bars giving a light architectural feel while allowing the interior to be displayed. Inside are adjustable shelves, originally intended for the display of books, fine porcelain and decorative objects.
Below, each piece features a single drawer above a cupboard, providing both practical storage and clean classical lines. This arrangement was typical of the period, offering a discreet place for smaller items above larger enclosed storage below, ideal for use in a gentleman’s library or drawing room.
The inlaid oval panels depicting classical urns are particularly fine, inspired by neoclassical design of the period and reflecting the influence of Hepplewhite and Sheraton. The crisp brass handles, elegant moulded cornices and shaped bracket feet complete the look.
Condition Report:
Excellent antique condition with a rich mellow colour and attractive patina. Minor age-related marks, light surface wear and some wear to the glazing as expected. Overall a very well-preserved and highly presentable pair.
A rare opportunity to acquire a true pair of elegant Regency bookcases combining display and storage, perfectly suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.
