circa 1820 - 1830

An Early 19th century Regency period carved rosewood settee designed by John Taylor and attributed to Gillow of Lancaster and London.

The camel back sofas are crisply carved throughout and the inverted shell to the centre back is very typically of Gillow’s workshops.

The sofa frames to the back are finished with rosewood veneers and are free standing.

The bold upright carved arms are very typical of John Taylor's designs with floral patterns and Grecian style motifs and complement the reeded legs which stand on the original gilt brass capped castors.

The diminutive sofas are upholstered in a Regency striped fabric and have the unusual but original designed side cushions which work very well with the scale and elegance of the sofas.

John Taylor traded from Bedford Crescent, Covent Garden, London, as an upholsterer and furniture designer (1821-1829). He was, at one time, employed by the Royal Cabinet Maker George Oakley.

Taylor had several designs of sofas and chairs published in Rudolph Ackermann's 'Repository of Arts' between 1821-1824.
