Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911) Signed Victorian Cornish Fisherman Original Marine Oil Painting
An evocative late Victorian original oil painting by British artist Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911), depicting a traditional fisherman releasing his catch aboard a wooden fishing vessel. Signed lower right, this atmospheric maritime composition captures the working life of Britain's historic fishing communities.
Description
The painting portrays a weather-beaten fisherman dressed in a dark hat, green knitted jumper and red neckerchief, carefully removing a hook from a substantial fish aboard his boat.
A traditional wicker fishing basket and further fish occupy the foreground, while grey-green waters, seabirds and a distant sailing vessel establish the coastal setting.
Carter's carefully observed figure, naturalistic colouring and attention to maritime detail reflect the traditions of Victorian British marine painting.
