Introduction

An especially decorative example of British Edwardian sporting art, ideally proportioned for placement above a console, within a picture wall or as part of a traditional country-house inspired interior.

Going to Fair depicts two chestnut horses moving briskly along a country road with an elegant carriage behind. Three figures travel aboard: the coachman in brown and black, a lady in salmon pink and a gentleman in formal dark clothing.

Catalogue Note

The painting's elongated format allows the horses and carriage to progress naturally across the composition.

Warm chestnut tones and golden-yellow details are set against verdant greens and a softly clouded blue sky. The gilt frame extends this warm palette beyond the painted surface and gives the work considerable decorative presence despite its intimate dimensions.

The Edwardian Country Scene

Beyond the travelling party, Rideout introduces mature trees, roadside vegetation and distant architecture.

The precise location has not been established. The buildings therefore remain part of the painting's atmospheric rural narrative rather than being assigned speculatively to a particular town or estate.

The Artist

Philip H. Rideout was a British sporting painter active during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

His known oeuvre contains numerous coaching, hunting and racing compositions. Christie’s records several Rideout carriage subjects and, importantly, another signed coaching painting dated 1908.

Published references differ regarding his precise life dates, and this catalogue therefore avoids presenting disputed biographical dates as established fact.

The reverse shows the historic canvas mounted on a wooden stretcher.

The painting is housed within a traditional gilt frame with ornamental outer moulding and beaded inner detail. The frame is not represented as original without documentary evidence.
